The Long Beach Medical Center Detoxification Program
The use and abuse of alcohol and/or other chemicals can disrupt a person’s life in many ways. Loss of employment, breakup of marriages and families, loss of self-esteem, and even loss of life can result from the continued abuse of substances without proper treatment.
However, with detoxification and an ongoing desire to remain free of the burden of substance abuse, many individuals can resume and maintain healthy lifestyles.
The Long Beach Medical Center Detoxification Program offers treatment to individuals age 18 and above who are chemically dependent or are suffering from the effects of drugs, alcohol, or acute withdrawal symptoms. Our services promote recovery and rehabilitation through a safe and therapeutic environment.
Referral services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are offered without regard to color, race, religion, disability, marital status, national origin, sex, or socio-economic standard.
Our Philosophy
The Long Beach Medical Center Detoxification Program views addiction as a primary, progressive, but treatable disease that affects not only the individuals who are chemically dependent, but also their families and significant others, as well as the communities in which they live.
As with other illnesses, addiction requires specialized and individualized intervention and treatment. Our treatment plan is multidisciplinary and addresses each area of the patient’s life: physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual.
Our program recognizes chemical addiction as a chronic disease, prone to relapse, which requires long-term involvement with continuing care and self-help programs in order to maintain abstinence and effect the lifestyle changes necessary for on-going recovery.
Program Highlights
Our treatment programs include:
● Comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment
● Comprehensive evaluation of physical & mental health needs
● Stabilization of withdrawal syndrome
● Minimization of the multiple impacts of withdrawal
● Therapeutic environment
● Provision of education, individual and group counseling, and family/significant
other intervention, education, and referral
● Aftercare referral for the maintenance of abstinence and to promote recovery
Treatment Plan
Our treatment service begins with a medically supervised inpatient hospital stay, which typically lasts 3 to 5 days. Upon admission, initial assessments of the patient’s fundamental needs are accomplished. These assessments include a medical history, physical, complete laboratory workup, and a nursing assessment.
Each patient is assigned a counselor, who will coordinate a comprehensive treatment plan that encompasses individual and group therapies, 12-step program components, relapse prevention education, and family counseling.
Aftercare
When the patient is stable to leave the hospital, he or she will be referred to appropriate aftercare programs. The goal of these programs is to blend support and education regarding chemical dependency with a relapse prevention plan.
Among these aftercare programs, Long Beach Medical Center offers licensed and credentialed outpatient alcohol and chemical dependency programs through FACTS (family alcohol and chemical-substance treatment services) and our Methadone Maintenance Program.
Our Treatment Team
Our staff includes physicians, registered nurses, certified counselors and social workers who are specially trained in drug, alcohol or acute withdrawal symptoms. Led by Sydney Hughes, MD, who serves as Medical Director of the Detoxification Unit and is board-certified in addiction treatment, our staff provides 24-hour hospital services to monitor and ensure a safe withdrawal from alcohol and/or drugs.
